Principal Update
Parents,
I felt it necessary to update you all on all the efforts being put forth to ensure your student is completing assignments and learning at MMS. It is amazing the opportunities available, and we want you to take full advantage of these options.Vikes Time:You are probably aware of our 8th period “Vikes Time,” which is both an intervention period and an enrichment time. Students missing assignments will report to an intervention, where they will get assistance from content specific teachers for 90 minutes a week. Students that have turned everything in are enrolled in an enrichment class of their choice. Many students have elected to become mentors for 6th grade students and also their peers. If you would like your student to be a mentor, please let Mrs. Watkins know. (WE ARE STILL LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS!!!)Tuesday After School Intervention:As an extension of our new intervention program, we will be hosting an after school study hall on Tuesday of each week, from 3:30 - 5:00. Mrs. McGraw will be available to help students who are MW, behind, needing computers, or just needing additional time. This is another great opportunity for students to get and stay caught up with assignments. If your child does not have access to a computer at home, this is a place they can work on those online assignments in a supervised environment. If you would like to enroll your child in this study hall, please contact Mr. Horning and also complete the study hall form: http://goo.gl/ArrmzK.Attendance will be taken at this study hall and students will be expected to be in the room, with work to accomplish. All school rules will still apply.Valhalla after school academic time:Each day that Valhalla is available (please see calendar), students are checked in and given a snack provided by food service. Students then attend a 45 minute academic time based on the type of homework they have: math, science, reading, and language arts. We have certified staff for each content area on hand each day to assist students with their homework. If a student has finished all of their homework, they are asked to have a book with them to read.Morning academic time:Morning study time is offered to students on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 am in the Annex A cafeteria. Amber Maude, 6th grade teacher, runs this study time. There is also breakfast available during this time.Milestone:Finally, we have an elective class designed to help students with different skills to be successful at the middle school. Skills include, Note taking strategies, Goal Setting Techniques, Identifying what type of learners they are, Test Taking Strategies, Promotion of self-advocacy, and homework completion time. Email Mr. Horning if you would like to enroll your student second semester.Again, please let Mr. Horning know if you have any desire to enroll your student in any of these amazing opportunities.Thank you,Andy HorningPrincipal

VIKES Time
This week we rolled out VIKES Time. VIKES is the 8th period class on your student's schedule Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. On Monday's all students get to watch the VIKES presentation promoting our VIKES Program and celebrating our MMS successes.
Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, students will attend either a 30 minute Enrichment class or a 30 minute Intervention class. Each quarter (9 weeks) all students are assigned to an Enrichment class - some examples are Chess, Photoshop, Creative Writing, and Speech and Debate. Each 9 weeks students can sign for a different Enrichment class.
Each week, reports are run through Skyward to check for students with missing assignments or "F" grades; these students will attend Intervention class that week to have extra time and help to finish those assignments and improve their grades. If they have the grades up and no missing assignments at the end of the week, then they will re-join their Enrichment class the following week.
We are excited to be able to provide some interesting classes for students and to provide more opportunities for academic success.

Skylert Calling System
The automated call system (Skylert) has been up and running the past week. If your child is absent, the parents need to call the school or enter it in Skyward before 10:00 am, to excuse your student, to avoid those calls.. If your student is not in class on time, there is a chance that they are marked absent, so you could get a call because of that too. A call to clarify if the student is present, is all we need. Do not hesitate to call the office for any questions regarding attendance issues.
A reminder also to keep your parent "Family Access" login and password separate from your student's. Each student at MMS has their own access to Skyward under Student Access and should not be using their parent's access, as parents have access to entering absences and viewing siblings information.

Schedules
Schedules should be finalized and posted by Monday August 18. If your student caught a glimpse of a schedule on their account last week, that was not their final schedule. Students should only refer to schedules posted on or after August 18.
A plea from the counselors: Please discourage your student from attempting to get their schedule re-arranged in order to be with their friends. It is completely understandable that they would want to do this, and this is why they take screenshots of their schedule to post on "Instagram" and other social media outlets - so they can try to match up classes. Unfortunately, custom scheduling almost 900 individual schedules in order to get friends together is quite impossible and we need to focus on academic needs first, keeping class sizes and balance in mind. Each grade level will have lunch together, and that is an important time for friends to connect.

Update
Well hello there. This page has not been updated lately due to other duties pulling staff time. We are looking at some new ideas for next year to make sure this page is updated on a regular basis in an effort to keep parents as informed as possible about the happenings here at MMS.
We are now at less than 2 weeks until school is out for the summer. Be sure to log in to Skyward to check those grades. Once final grades are posted, those students needing summer school will be notified. Summer School dates are May 27 - June 30, 7:30 am - 12:30 pm.
Click here for information on a free parent workshop on Asthma.
8th grade parents - your student should have registered in Skyward for next year's classes. About 95 8th graders still have not brought in the Skyward print-out that serves as their pre-registration forms. They have been getting reminder notes delivered to them. Here are some tips:
1. When you or your student logs into Skyward, you need to switch the tab in the center top of the screen from "MMS" to "MHS".
2. There is an instructional video, and complete course book for the high school on this web page.
3. 9th graders need 16 classes listed; 18 if in a "zero " hour class such as Marching Band or Show Choir.
4. Core classes have already been entered for the students. They need to add their electives and other classes. I encourage students to get their 2 PE classes and Intro Computers classes done as these are graduation requirements.
5. Have your student sign up to see me (Mrs. Barnes) or feel free to call me at 585-3251. Some questions may need to be answered by the high school counselors, but feel free to call me first.
