Parents,
I felt it necessary to update you all on all the efforts being put forth to ensure your student is completing assignments and learning at MMS. It is amazing the opportunities available, and we want you to take full advantage of these options.Vikes Time:You are probably aware of our 8th period “Vikes Time,” which is both an intervention period and an enrichment time. Students missing assignments will report to an intervention, where they will get assistance from content specific teachers for 90 minutes a week. Students that have turned everything in are enrolled in an enrichment class of their choice. Many students have elected to become mentors for 6th grade students and also their peers. If you would like your student to be a mentor, please let Mrs. Watkins know. (WE ARE STILL LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS!!!)Tuesday After School Intervention:As an extension of our new intervention program, we will be hosting an after school study hall on Tuesday of each week, from 3:30 - 5:00. Mrs. McGraw will be available to help students who are MW, behind, needing computers, or just needing additional time. This is another great opportunity for students to get and stay caught up with assignments. If your child does not have access to a computer at home, this is a place they can work on those online assignments in a supervised environment. If you would like to enroll your child in this study hall, please contact Mr. Horning and also complete the study hall form: http://goo.gl/ArrmzK.Attendance will be taken at this study hall and students will be expected to be in the room, with work to accomplish. All school rules will still apply.Valhalla after school academic time:Each day that Valhalla is available (please see calendar), students are checked in and given a snack provided by food service. Students then attend a 45 minute academic time based on the type of homework they have: math, science, reading, and language arts. We have certified staff for each content area on hand each day to assist students with their homework. If a student has finished all of their homework, they are asked to have a book with them to read.Morning academic time:Morning study time is offered to students on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 am in the Annex A cafeteria. Amber Maude, 6th grade teacher, runs this study time. There is also breakfast available during this time.Milestone:Finally, we have an elective class designed to help students with different skills to be successful at the middle school. Skills include, Note taking strategies, Goal Setting Techniques, Identifying what type of learners they are, Test Taking Strategies, Promotion of self-advocacy, and homework completion time. Email Mr. Horning if you would like to enroll your student second semester.Again, please let Mr. Horning know if you have any desire to enroll your student in any of these amazing opportunities.Thank you,Andy HorningPrincipal
